Can I set a maximum inventory level for a product?

Not as a built-in feature — there's no native "maximum stock level," reorder point, or low-stock alert setting today, and nothing triggers a warning when a level is exceeded.

The recommended workaround is a numeric custom field: from the chemical list, choose "Add more columns" → "Add custom field," set the type to Numeric, and name it something like "Max stock (L)." You can fill it in per chemical (including in bulk, for several chemicals at once), show it as a column next to the actual amount, filter on it, and include it in exports. Because the value is stored per chemical and location, you can document a different maximum for the same chemical at different storage locations.
