Note: this answer covers Add Chemical — the search box you use to look up an existing chemical by CAS number or name. If a chemical genuinely has no CAS number, don't use this search box at all — see “Can I add a substance that doesn't have a CAS number?” in the Substance & Mixture Library section for that separate flow (added via Select Preset instead).
When you search for a substance under Ingredient Details using Add Chemical — whether it's a single substance or a component of a mixture — three fields are required before that ingredient is accepted:
CAS Number or Chemical Name — one combined search field: type either the CAS number or the chemical name of a chemical that already exists in the database, and ExactSDS looks it up. You only need to provide one of the two, not both — but either way, the chemical this finds already has a real CAS number on file; searching by name is just a convenience, not a way to create a chemical without one.
Actual Percentage — the real percentage of that ingredient in your product.
SDS Displayed Percentage — the percentage (or range) you want shown on the printed SDS, useful if you don't want to disclose your exact formulation.
All three are marked with a red * and none of them can be left blank — you won't be able to move on to the next section until they're filled in.
